Is There Really Such a Thing as a 0 Credit Card Interest Rate?

Defined Tag:

For people who are used to paying an interest rate on their credit cards, they may be surprised to find out there really is such a thing as a 0 credit card interest rate. However, there is in fact such a thing, and the truth is that they may be able to enjoy that perk without ever changing from their current credit card providers.

Many credit cards are issued without any type of annual fee assessed. In place of that annual fee, there is an interest rate structure that is in place. Typically, the interest rate is applied to any outstanding balance on the card over thirty days. In the event of failure to make payments on time, the card issuer may invoke a higher interest rate. The expectation is that people will in fact not pay off their cards every month, and therefore will be accessed some interest on the outstanding balance.

So, if you want a 0 credit card interest rate, what you do is pay off your cards on time every billing cycle. With no outstanding balance to calculate interest on, you end up with a 0 credit card interest rate.

Of course, there are some credit card plans that will advertise a 0 interest rate that is extended for a period of time after opening the account. As an example, you open a new account that is offered with a 0 credit card interest rate for the first six months, subject to you making your minimum payment on time every billing cycle. With this arrangement, you can transfer balances from other cards onto this new account, then make sure you pay off everything in that six month window. You will have taken advantage of the 0 interest rate to greatly reduce your debt, and also established an excellent payment record with your new credit card provider.

Should you choose to accept any offer that presents itself as having a 0 interest rate, make sure you read all the terms and conditions. See how long the 0 credit card interest rate applies. Make sure you know what you have to do to maintain that 0 interest rate for as long as possible. By knowing what you are committing to, you will understand whether accepting a card offer with a 0 credit card interest rate is really in your best interests.
